Members, family and friends of a range of Canterbury sporting organisations gathered at Bishopdale Tavern & TAB on Monday, where Silver Ferns Captain and TAB Sports Ambassador Katrina Grant and champion Canterbury rower Veronica Wall presented thousands of dollars worth of funding, to help turn some dreams into reality for these grassroots organisations.

Among the recipients was the Avon Rowing Club, who were granted $15,000 worth of funding to purchase a new coxless four hull boat, and a range of wings for other boats. As the largest rowing club in New Zealand, over 80% of rowers in the Canterbury region belong to Avon. There was a small bit of irony when Veronica handed over a cheque to her rival club, being a member of Ashburton Rowing Club herself!

Avon Rowing representative Jamie Mountier, pictured above, was more than happy to pick up a cheque on behalf of the club. "Thanks to NZRB for supporting Avon Rowing Club," said Jaime. "We're stoked to be able to buy a new coxless four with your help, and we're looking forward to getting it out on the water."

Recipients for this round of funding also included Canterbury Golf, Southbridge Rugby Football Club, Christchurch Football Club, Athletics Canterbury and Jellie Park Aqualand Sports Institute.

Much of the funding was particularly timely for many of the clubs, who are approaching major 2018 tournaments and championships. New facilities, equipment, uniforms and travel will no doubt be a boon for these organisations.

Te Wero Gymnastics members in particularly expressed their thanks in recieving receiving funding for a new foam & tumble pit, with $12,500 being allocated to to the vision of internationally experienced coaches Jozsi Ferencz and Svetlana Sazonova who have been planning and fundraising for it. NZRB is proud to provide the financial support that will allow the club to build the pit, and fill it with high quality dunlop foam, providing a soft landing both financially and literally to the club and it’s gymnasts.

It's a busy time for our Katrina and Veronica, our TAB Ambassadors, who made time in their busy schedules to present the cheques and talk with the recipients about their projects. Katrina Grant will be captaining the Silver Ferns in their upcoming Taini Jamison Trophy tournament held on the North Shore from 21-24 March, as well as in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Veronica Wall is one of New Zealand’s best up and coming rowers, recently winning four gold medals as the National Championships, as well as setting a world U20 record in the single sculls.

Both Veronica and Katrina will be bringing dreams to life, as TAB Sports Ambassaadors, for a range of community sporting organisations throughout the year.

NZRB provides funding from gaming operations to grassroots community sporting organisations through sports authorised purposes grants. In the last 2016/17 Financial Year, 434 grants were made, paying over $3.2 million to support sporting groups around New Zealand. So far $1.811m has been distributed in the 2017/18 Financial Year.
